Types of Volunteer Firefighters:

In-District Volunteer Firefighter

  • Must be able to Pass Background Investigation and NFPA Physical
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Must have Oregon Driver’s License and be insurable 
  • Almost 300 hours of initial Firefighter Training (First Year)
  • Attend Thursday Evening Drills
  • Respond to large incidents and Station Coverage requests when available 
  • Point Reimbursement available for calls, training, and meeting attendance

Out of District Volunteer Firefighter

  • Must be able to Pass Background Investigation and NFPA Physical
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Must have Oregon Driver’s License and be insurable 
  • Almost 300 hours of initial Firefighter Training (First Year)
  • Attend Thursday Evening Drills
  • Respond to large incidents when available
  • Complete 36 Hours of shift coverage per month
  • Point Reimbursement available for calls, training and meeting attendance

Sutherlin Fire Department's Scholarship Student Program:

We believe your education is important, let us help!

  1. Are you currently enrolled in College?
  2. Are you interested in Tuition Assistance?
  3. Are you interested in helping the Community?
  4. If so, then you may eligible for a scholarship!
  • Awards are $2,700 per term, four terms per year ($10,800 annually)
  • Scholarship paid to Umpqua Community College (or other school) at the start of the term 
  • Residency possibly available at a local fire station
  • You must be currently enrolled in Fire/EMS College courses
  • You will be required to maintain a GPA of 2.75
  • Pass a criminal background check and a medical examination
  • Participation in the program requires a commitment of ten 24-hour shifts a month, and will require you to obtain certifications in Firefighting and/or EMS
  • Work along side Career and Volunteer Firefighters on a staffed Engine Company
  • Mobilization & upstaffing pay possible (if qualified)

Sutherlin Fire Department's CWE Student Program:

  • Receive firefighting training and experience while you attend college
  • Obtain National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter 1 certification and more
  • Gain experience working alongside and as a member of the crew on a staffed Engine Company
  • Residency possibly available at a local fire station
  • CWE Students are perfect for those who do not need a scholarship, or for those who want to start before a scholarship become available
